When several people walk or care for one dog, shared access to a GPS tracker can reduce the need to pass one phone around. Tractive's Family Sharing is a Premium-plan feature that allows invited people to view the tracker through their own Tractive account.
It is useful coordination technology, not a substitute for a proper handover, secure equipment or professional responsibility.
How Tractive Family Sharing works
According to Tractive's current help guidance:
- the tracker owner needs a Premium subscription;
- invited people create or use a free Tractive account and app;
- they do not need to buy a separate subscription for that shared tracker;
- the owner can invite multiple trusted people and remove access later.
Feature details can change, so confirm the current permissions before giving access. Only invite people you trust with the dog's location data.
Who may find it useful?
Families sharing walks
Several household members can check the same tracker without sharing a password. This can help everyone see whether a walk is still in progress or locate the dog if an incident occurs.
It does not replace a message saying who has the dog, where they are going and when they expect to return.
Friends or relatives providing care
Temporary access may help a trusted person while the owner is away. Test the app and device together before the first unsupervised walk.
Professional dog walkers
A client may choose to share access to their dog's tracker. The walker and owner should agree:
- who checks the tracker and when;
- what happens if the device detaches or loses signal;
- who is contacted in an emergency;
- whether the tracker is used on group walks;
- how location data will be handled;
- when the walker's access will be removed.
A consumer GPS app does not replace insurance, contracts, risk assessment, secure transport or the walker's duty of care.
Shared access does not remove technical limits
Every user sees information produced by the same tracker. More phones do not create a better GPS or cellular signal.
The device still needs:
- battery power;
- GPS reception;
- compatible cellular coverage;
- an active subscription;
- secure attachment to the dog.
If coverage is lost, everyone may see the same last known location until the tracker reconnects.
LIVE Tracking and battery use
Tractive says LIVE Tracking can update approximately every two to three seconds when the tracker is connected and conditions allow. It uses more battery than ordinary tracking.
Agree who will activate LIVE Tracking during an incident. Several people repeatedly changing settings can create confusion. The calmest plan gives one person responsibility for coordinating the search while others follow agreed tasks.
Family Sharing versus a public link
Family Sharing is intended for ongoing access by trusted people with Tractive accounts. Tractive also offers public sharing for time-limited access in some situations.
Use the least access needed. Do not post a live or historical home-location link publicly. Remove a carer's access when it is no longer required and review the account's current privacy and security settings.
What Premium adds
Tractive currently lists Premium features including:
- Family Sharing;
- supported use across more than 175 countries;
- up to 365 days of location history;
- location-history export.
Basic, where offered, works in one selected country and does not include the same Premium features. Check the live plan comparison before buying or renewing.
A safer shared-care handover
Before the dog leaves:
- Check collar, harness, lead and tracker attachment.
- Confirm the phone has the app, data, notifications and enough battery.
- State the route or destination and expected return time.
- Share vet, owner and emergency contact details.
- Explain the dog's recall, triggers, medication and handling needs.
- Confirm what to do if the tracker loses signal.
- Keep microchip details and collar identification current.
The tracker is one item on that list, not the whole safety system.
Is Premium sensible for your household?
It may be a good fit where several trusted people regularly care for one dog and genuinely need app access. It may be unnecessary if one person always handles the dog and the extra Premium features will not be used.
Compare the total subscription cost, current feature list, coverage and tracker model before deciding.
